Bird flu is an infection caused by avian influenza (bird flu) viruses. Bird flu is very contagious among birds and can be caught by domesticated pets that come into contact with infected faeces or infected birds, or through contact with surfaces (e.g dirt or cages) or materials (such as water or feed) that have been contaminated with the virus. Animals can become ill within 48 hours of contact. Although unlikely, it is possible for onward transmission of bird flu to occur in humans. To date, more than 100 people have died from the H5N1 Virus.
Symptoms of avian influenza in humans range from typical human influenza-like symptoms (e.g high temperature, cough, sore throat, and muscle aches) to eye infections, pneumonia, and severe breathing difficulties. The symptoms of avian influenza may depend on which specific virus strain caused the infection.
